The Vredefeesten have a long history. The reason for its creation was the commemoration of the liberation of the city during the Second World War. The first edition of the Liberation Festivities, the then name of the event, took place in 1948. In 1973 the Sint-Niklase city council decided to rename the Liberation Festivities as the Vredefeesten.
Since years they have a balloon meeting where the balloons take off in the middle of the center. From this year there will be also a competition with take off on another site in the city. This year only for Belgian pilots.
